The Austin Shines event began with a day of educational seminars that were geared toward new and aspiring designers. For an overview of what was discussed, read below and see the timeline at the right for content and format.

Seminar Content + Speakers

Jewelry designer Kendra Scott kicked off the day at 12 noon with an informative and inspriational keynote address! We learned so much from one of Austin's most successful designers about what it takes to succeed and about following your dreams.

Other seminar leaders included a mix of industry experts, including Austin area designers, business owners, retailers, Industry influencers, press, and educators. For more information see the schedule at the right.



General subjects which were discussed include:
  • Getting Started: Starting a commercial business, entrepreneurship, etc.
  • Preparing your collection for wholesale and retail sale, pricing, competition, etc.
  • Marketing your Collection: Differentiating yourself, presentation, developing line sheets, tradeshows, sales events, etc.
  • Sales Tips and Selling to retailers: What to expect, etc.
  • Using technology in your business, social networking, online stores, etc.
  • Raising capital, growing and scaling your business, finding professinal resources (tax issues, attorneys, buiness mentors, business plan help) etc.
  • Production/Manufacturing, supply sources, financing, production and Manufacturing

Educational discussions were moderated and seminars were about 1 hour each. Attendees had breaks between sessions for networking, Q&A, feedback, and refreshments.

Preparing your collection for wholesale and retail sale: what to expect on both sides


We'll share with designers basic facts, challenges, and advice about starting up collections, sourcing materials, creating a variety of designs, developing line sheets, pricing, production, delivery times, what is involved in going to market, dealing with stores and sales reps, etc.
